This is a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document about the Cratejoy Add-Ons App that can be installed from the App Store in the Cratejoy seller portal.

The Add-Ons App unlocks the ability for sellers to offer one-time products as add-ons to the first shipment of customers buying a new subscription product.

Cross-selling products in this manner is a great way for sellers to try and increase their average order value (AOV), their customer lifetime value (LTV), and overall increase revenue for their business.


  • Q: How does the Add-Ons app generally work?

  • A: Installing the Add-Ons app enables sellers to a new step to their subscribe flow called Add-Ons. This will present one-time products, that the seller configures, so that customers can buy them and add them to their first shipment as they are buying a new subscription product. This helps sellers try and increase their AOV and LTV on their store.

    This type of cross-sell normally affects only 0.2% of overall carts based on eCommerce industry average. So only a small amount of customers going through the subscribe flow will actually purchase an add-on but that supplemental revenue can add up over time.

  • Q: Does the Add-Ons app cost extra to use like the Referral Program app?

  • A: No, the Add-Ons app is FREE. Transactions are processed with the normal fees from your payment processor and Cratejoy but there no extra costs to use the app.

  • Q: How do I setup and use the Add-Ons app?

  • Q: Will my site theme support Add-Ons out of the box?

  • A: We recommend that sellers use the most updated themes so that installing and configuring add-ons is straight-forward and scalable. The Add-Ons app does support new and old designer themes but only those that use the subscribe flow steps that are configured on the subscription product page. If you have customized your site to use a custom subscribe flow or are using an older theme that a hard-coded subscribe flow, you'll need to work with a developer to integrate and use Add-Ons on your store. If you are unsure as to what you have, please email us ([email protected]) and we'll be able to tell you.

  • Q: Can I only offer one-time products as add-ons to subscription products?

  • Q: How many one-time products can I configure as add-on offerings?

  • A: There is no limit. However, Cratejoy suggests only configuring 1 to 3 add-on offerings for each subscription product though. During testing, offering just 1 add-on had the most people on average adding it to their cart. Especially on mobile. Having 3 add-ons configured performed the second best.

  • Q: Which one-time products should I offer or have place as the first offering?

  • A: One-time products that are priced lower than the subscription product perform better than ones that are more expensive as it's easier for customers to act on the "impulse buy". Customers tend to select the first add-on offering the most when there are multiples to choose from. You can change the order of which add-on appear first by dragging and dropping them on the subscription product page in the Add-Ons step. Since the first position is what customers choose the most, you should make that one the most popular or the one you wished people would buy.

  • Q: Can I swap out which one-time products I offer as add-ons any time I want?

  • A: Yes, you can change which products you offer as add-ons at any time by just editing them on the subscription product page (in the Add-Ons step of the subscribe flow). You can add, delete, change the order or completely remove the Add-Ons step any time you wish. Just save your changes and the changes should be reflected immediately on your website (refresh the page if you were on it before the changes were made).

  • Q: What if I want to offer a one-time product that I don't want to show up on my Shop page?

  • A: You can configure both Hidden and Visible one-time products as add-ons to a subscription product. Hidden one-time products will not show up on your Shop page but will show up on the Add-Ons step of the subscribe flow if they are configured for that subscription. You can configure whether a one-time product is Visible or Hidden in the one-time product page. Using this, sellers can create hidden one-time products that they want to offer as add-ons that have a special pricing or shipping policy that they wouldn't want regular Shop customers to be able to purchase.

  • Q: Can I change what one-time products are offered as add-ons based on what term, variant or survey answers that the customer has chosen?

  • A: No, at the moment add-ons are statically set for each subscription product no matter how the customer customizes it. If you'd like to be able to change which one-time products are offered based on which term, variant or survey answers a customer has selected, please submit a feature request here.

  • Q: What happens if my add-on one-time product is Out of Stock when I'm Tracking Inventory?

  • A: If an add-on one-time product is configured to Track Inventory and it is completely Out of Stock at the moment, then it will not show as an offering on the Add-Ons step to customers. If all add-ons are Out of Stock, then the Add-Ons step itself will be intelligently skipped over during the subscribe flow to reduce cart abandonment from having a page with nothing for customers to choose from. If a one-time product has variants, then all variants must be Out of Stock for it not to show. If Out of Stock Purchases are enabled on the one-time product page then the add-on will show as sellers have indicated that out of stock purchases are okay. Test orders do not count against inventory stock.

  • Q: How can I tell what impact adding the Add-Ons step has to my subscribe flow conversion rate?

  • Q: How are add-on shipments handled in the seller portal?

  • A: Shipments where a customer purchased both a subscription product and add-ons will show up on the Shipments page in the seller portal under the Subscription product tab. It will not show up under the One-Time Products tab on the Shipments page. When looking at the add-on shipment, you will see the subscription product listed first and then all purchased products listed under that. There is a new filter for "Shipment With Add-Ons" & "Shipments Without Add-Ons" that you can use to only see shipments that have add-ons so you can fulfill those together if you wish.

  • Q: Are add-on shipments supported by 3rd party shipping tools (ShipStation, Pirate Ship, etc.), the Cratejoy API and fulfillment centers?

  • A: Yes, add-on shipments work with 3rd party shipping tools, integration with the Cratejoy API and fulfillment centers. Sellers may need to create new processes to handle these add-on shipments but ShipStation and Pirate Ship have been proven to accept and handle add-on shipments with no extra configuration change needed. Fulfillment centers may charge fulfillment prices different for add-on shipment as they could be very unique based on what the customer picked to add to their box. We highly suggest sellers that use 3rd party shipping tools and fulfillment centers to test this out with those things to make sure it works for their business needs.

  • Q: How are add-ons shipments treated on the checkout page for shipping costs?

  • A: No changes are made to how shipping rules work for add-on shipments compared to others.   • Q: Does installing the Add-Ons app merge all multi-product type carts into just 1 shipment or is it just ones chosen through the Add-Ons step?

  • A: If you do not have the Add-Ons app installed on your store, a multi-product type (subscription product and a one-time product) cart would generate 2 shipments. One for the subscription product and one for the one-time product. If you have the Add-Ons app installed, ALL multi-product type carts will be merged into just 1 shipment instead of 2. Not just the carts that are created through the Add-Ons step but also if the customer chooses a subscription product and then goes to the Shop page to add one-time products to their cart.

  • Q: Are add-ons available to offer on the Cratejoy marketplace?

  • A: No, not at the moment. The Add-Ons app only adds support for offering one-time product add-ons to customers buying a subscription product on your storefront website.   • Q: If an existing customer of mine that was obtained through the Cratejoy marketplace goes to my storefront website later on and buys a new subscription product and adds-ons, will their order be eligible for Cratejoy's 10% marketplace fee?

  • A: No. The Cratejoy marketplace fee is only accessed on orders that happen on the marketplace as well. The customer in this example would still have the normal transaction fees accessed at checkout but not the 10% marketplace fee.

  • Q: How can I monitor and measure how much revenue offering add-ons gets me?

  • A: You can do this by using the Revenue by Product report (Analytics>>General in the seller portal), looking at one-time products that you've configured as add-ons and looking at the revenue from them before and after you started offering them. Also monitoring the Avg. Revenue per Subscriber metric, that shows on the top-right part of the Dashboard in the seller portal, could give you insight into how your average order value (AOV) changes once you introduce add-ons.

  • Q: Can I easily customize the Add-Ons page that customers see using the Cratejoy Designer?

  • A: Yes, you can use the Cratejoy designer to easily customize components of the Add-Ons page that customers view. You can change things like color and copy and button state text. This is supported in both the old and new Cratejoy Designer. The page is also completely customizable through the Code portion as well of the theme. Sellers can change the Code portion to change things like the "Continue to checkout" button placement and the size and ordering of the one-time product containers on that page.

Cratejoy HEAVILY recommends customizing your store design on an unpublished copy of your published theme instead of on your published live theme. If you make a mistake when editing your live theme, then it could negatively affect your live store. Better to change and test on an unpublished copy of your live theme and then published that theme once you have tested it thoroughly and know that it works the way you want.
