Under the Marketing Settings section of your Checkout Settings (Settings --> Checkout), merchants have two options: Customers must opt-in to marketing communications, or Customers receive marketing communications by default with the extra option of customizing the marketing conditions if the merchant selects the former option.
- Customers receive marketing email by default means that customers are not asked about their marketing communication preferences when they purchase. If you use integrations like the Cratejoy MailChimp app, all customer email addresses are sent to your MailChimp list.
- Customers must opt-in to marketing email means that customers are asked about their marketing preferences upon checkout with a checkbox. Selecting this option triggers a few changes to your website's checkout page, your Cratejoy CSV exports, your Cratejoy MailChimp app, and API responses.
Asking Customers to Opt-In to Marketing Communications
If you've selected, Customers must opt-in to marketing email; then, a checkbox will be automatically appended to the Create Account section of your checkout page.
The text is fully customizable in your checkout settings page, so you can feel free to customize it to fit your brand voice or explain precisely what customers might expect to receive if they opt-in to your marketing communications.
Tracking Opted-In Customers
If you've selected, Customers must opt-in to marketing email, then you'll see a few changes to your exports, your Cratejoy MailChimp app, and your API responses.
You'll find an accepts_marketing field in your subscription, shipment, customer, and transaction CSV exports, your MailChimp apps, and your API calls:
- Customers with true in the accepts_marketing field opted into marketing communications at the time of checkout.
- Customers with false in the accepts_marketing field were presented with the option to opt-in to marketing communications at the time of checkout but did not opt-in at the time of checkout.
- Customers with no value in the accepts_marketing field were not shown the option to opt-in to marketing communication, so they neither opted in nor opted out of marketing at the time of checkout.
Your CSV Exports
You'll find an accepts_marketing field in your subscription, shipment, customer, and transaction CSV exports if you have enabled this setting.
Your Cratejoy MailChimp App
You'll find an accept_mar merge variable in the list you have associated with your Cratejoy account.
You can filter or create segments in MailChimp with this merge field to send promotional emails to customers who have opted in to receive email marketing.
